Potting Bench Reveal

I am so excited about the end result of my potting bench!  I can’t wait to show you!  It is made almost completely of reused materials or seconds.

I started with this platform that I showed you a couple of weeks ago.

Then I added 4×4 posts screwed down through a bracket onto the platform.  It was a little tricky to get everything square but I worked slowly and took my time to make sure I got it right so that it didn’t become a problem later in the build.  At Les’ suggestion, I rested my roof shutters on a 2×4 and then covered their ends with a piece of 1×8.  The shutters aren’t secured down so I can lift them out to clean or paint as I need to.  In the following photos I also propped up an old window frame on the back to see how it would look.  That blue garbage can holds my potting soil.  It stands out like a sore thumb so that needs to change.

The next time I worked on the bench, I made a counter out of 2 2×12 fir.  I also attached the window and a couple of wider shutters on either side.  I also swapped out the garbage can for a galvanized one.  So much better!

The finishing touch was adding a couple of spindles and a decorative piece to support the front of the counter.  I also hung a solar chandelier.

I am so pleased with the result and have already used it a few times.  The only thing that I may have to do is add some angle braces on the side to help keep it square.  I will get Les’ advice on that.

I am planning on adding some stone steps in front of the bench with a few creeping plants in between the stones.  I am excited to get started on that but I have a few maintenance projects to complete first!

Great job Michele — this looks more like a decorative piece than a working space!! Love your sign about the experimental dandelion farm.
