An Option for Cleaning Silver
As you know, I am a fan of silver. And silver gets tarnished. I found an easy solution for this and I thought I would share it with you today. I don’t know if it is hard on silver plate so I usually only use it for really tarnished pieces. For regular maintenance I just use a silver polish. And it is a smelly process. Just to warn you!
I received this little silver salt cellar awhile ago and it was very tarnished. I started to polish it by hand (on the left side) but it was slow going so I decided to go the other route.
I pulled out a bowl and some aluminum foil.
I fit the foil inside the bowl.
I put two teaspoons of baking soda and teaspoon of salt in the bowl.
Then I added one cup of boiling water.
I submerged the salt cellar into the mixture and let it sit for a few minutes.
With the heavy tarnish on this piece, I still did a little hand polishing afterwards but it was much easier than before. Perhaps if I had let it sit for a longer time it would have come totally clean. I rinsed it with clean water and dried it with a soft cloth.
This process has surprised me more than once with how shiny the pieces are afterwards. Again, I don’t know if it is hard on the silver but it works!
